Mongla Port or Mongla Port

Mongla port

 Mongla Port or Mongla Port

The distance from Khulna to Mongla port is 48 kilometers.  The port is located about 100 km north of the Bay of Bengal.  The port of Mongla is connected to other inland river ports and the railway terminal at Khulna.

It is located at the junction of Pashur and Mongla rivers in Selabunia mouza of Rampal upazila of Bagerhat district of Khulna division.  Established on 1 December 1950, Mongla Port is the second largest seaport in Bangladesh.

The port has eleven jetties, seven sheds and eight warehouses for loading and unloading goods.  There are also twelve anchors floating deep in the river.  Mongla Port Authority has built a rest house at Hiran Point in the Sundarbans with sailors in mind.

The port of Mongla is open 24 hours a day for unloading cargo, with a maximum capacity of 225 meters.  Every year about 400 ships anchor and export about 3 million metric tons of goods at Mongla port.

Initially, the port of Mongla was built 18 km upstream of the Pashur River from Chalna, then on 11 December 1950, when the port was opened for foreign ships, the port was shifted to its present location in Mongla in 1954, considering the greater convenience of anchoring ships.  Although the port of Mongla is connected to almost all the ports of the world, most of the ships come from Asia, the Middle East, Australia, Europe and North America.

 Where to stay

The town of Mongla is on the other side of the Pashur River, but there are overnight residential hotels on both banks.  There is a hotel of Bangladesh Tourism Corporation next to Pashur Mongla bus stand.

You can also stay overnight in Bagerhat.  There are government guesthouses and various hotels in Bagerhat Sadar.  In addition to Mumtaz and Hotel Avi, you can spend the night at Hotel Al Amin and Hotel Mohana adjacent to the central bus station for Rs 400 to Rs 1,000.

 Food facilities

You can dine at several standard hotels in Mongla, as well as at the bus stand in Bagerhat or at hotels near the Dargah.  But be sure to know about the quality and price of food.
