Kinds and Where grown : There are two kinds of jute plants in our country. One is called the “Tosah”  of the other is called the “Deshi”. It grows best in hot and moist climate. Low land is suitable for its growth. In Bangladesh it grows best in Mymensing, Faridpur, Noakhali, Comilla, Sylhet, Dhaka, Pubna, Rangpur, Rajshahi etc. It is also produced in west Bengal, Madras and Orissa.

Method of cultivation : Peasants plough the land in the month of march. Before sowing
seeds they manure the land and weed out the grasses. Then they sow the seeds. Soon the plants cover the filed. They grow five to eight cubits high. Then they are cut down and put into water to rot. The fibre of the rotten plants are drawn out. The fibre is washed in the clean water and dried in the sun. Thus jute becomes ready for sale

Usefulness Jute is very useful us. It is used in making ropes, bags, mats etc. It is also used in making fine clothes and paper. Its stalks are used as fuel. Jute is our cash crop. We earn a lot of money by exporting  raw jute and finished goods to foreign countries.
